Emotionally charged ramblings from a Student of Life.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Fuck Kansas State. This place is Awesome.

SUNDAY 5/3

Lazy day at the beach with Robin, Paul and Kip. Lunch at a place called Calico Jacks (CJs), long walk down Seven Mile Beach (SMB) checking out all of the resorts, hanging out on floating loungers at the Ritz Carlton's portion of the beach.

MONDAY 5/4

Our semester begins with orientation, which was pretty useless for the nine vet students since it was directed more towards the 60+ med students. Gave us some time to get to know our group, though. Brief nap and then school-hosted mixer for the new vet and med students. Basically we were a bright spot of red amidst a sea of white. I believe a reference to a bloodstain on white sheets was made. We were pretty well shunned as if that was the case. Seems either our red shirts were rather intimidating or else it was just a natural resistance of mixing two worlds.

TUESDAY 5/5

Our second day of orientation brought with it the Veterinary Leadership Experience. Basically we all got together for the day out at the Ag building to play trust games like balancing 9 people on a little 12"x12" block of wood long enough to sing Row Row Row Your Boat. I tell you there is no better way to determine who the leaders are in a group or who thinks outside of the box.

That evening the seventh semesters hosted a party (fundraiser) at The O Bar to welcome the new students. Kip and I felt bad that no one from our class was planning on attending (read: we were bored) so he and I headed over after dinner at Coconut Joes. The shindig was scheduled to begin at ten, so we got there around 10:30 or so. There were four people there.

After about thirty minutes more people started trickling in, and we met people from all semesters. Most of them introduced themselves, but either we smelled funky or exuded some sort of 'stay away' pheromone because once introduced no one stuck around to get to know us. In the end it wasn't too welcoming. I'm pretty sure I would have stuck a straw in my eye for amusement had Kip not been there to make me laugh.

WEDNESDAY 5/6

Our first day of classes was interesting to say the least. We started out with Anatomy at 8AM. The anatomy program here is designed to be held completely at the Ag building across the island. We have lecture in one half of the room and lab on the other half. Initially I was worried about the smell factor, but that's not really a problem since all of our cadavers are fresh (ie. no formalin). After about 2 hours of lecture we were introduced to our specimens. My group got lucky [sarcasm] and landed a 10 week old puppy. Sweet.

We are scheduled anatomy every MWF, and are given an hour break between noon and one to run any errands, eat lunch and return to the main campus for our Histology lecture. Somehow Robin and I were able to hit the bank (quite unsuccessfully) and grab some coffee at Perk Up before running back to the campus. With ten minutes to spare we searched for our classroom and found it empty.

Seems our class had been dismissed because our Histology professor was missing in India and no one could reach him. In their excitement at being dismissed no one thought to text me or Robin and fill us in.

Losers.

While we were of course all very worried about the missing Dr. Kumar, there were errands to run and now time to complete them. Robin and I swung by the dorms, picked up Kip, took him to open his bank account (where he entertained the receptionist and us with card tricks), had a late lunch at Eats/Legendz Bar (where Robin and I were pupils of Intro to Soccer 101, Professor Kip-style), visited my bank (once again unsuccessfully), went home for movie night and stayed up until the wee hours just shooting the shit.

I love college.

Ok - far be it for ME to determine what is gross ... but FRESH cadavers??? How do you keep them fresh?
At least it's way more similar to surgery than jerky :)
